Alan Jones’ butler David Allan reveals what he saw
Alan Jones’ long-time butler has told a court that he did not see the media giant act inappropriately towards younger men inside his luxury inner Sydney apartment.
Mr Jones is standing trial in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court having pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching.
He has continuously denied the allegations that he kissed or groped five male complainants between 2003 and 2020 and is fighting the allegations in a marathon trial, which has been running for just short of eight weeks.
During at-times colourful evidence on Thursday, David Allan, who was Mr Jones’ long-time butler at his Circular Quay apartment, painted a picture of what it was like to work inside the home of one of the country’s most powerful men.
He also told the court that he did not see Mr Jones act inappropriately towards three male complainants – who can only be known as J, C and M – during his 18 and a half years working for the former 2GB host.
Four male complainants have so far given evidence during Mr Jones’ trial.
Of those, three have given evidence that they were allegedly kissed without their consent by Mr Jones inside his apartment building, known as the Toaster.
Mr Allan told the court that he did not witness any inappropriate behaviour by Mr Jones.
“No, I didn’t, no I didn’t,” Mr Allan said when asked if he had witnessed any inappropriate behaviour towards Complainant C.
He gave the same response when asked the same question regarding Complainant M, who was a high-profile athlete.
He told the court he could not remember Complainant J, who was also an athlete at the time of the alleged incidents.
But when asked if he could recall any inappropriate behaviour towards any young athletes, Mr Allan said: “No, I can’t, I can’t.”
When Mr Allan was asked by Crown prosecutor Georgina Wright SC how Mr Jones would greet Complainant M when he arrived at the apartment, he said: “It was always the same as all sports people seem to do … hug, slap on the bottom, grab each other, ‘hello champion’. And sit down and chat away and off they’d go.”
It prompted Ms Wright to follow up: “Did you say a slap on the bottom?”.
