7NEWS presenter Katrina Blowers prepares to run Bridge to Brisbane just months after Gold Coast marathon
We just get on with things, don’t take ourselves too seriously and, when given the opportunity to turn something into a bit of fun, we generally grab it.
I think the Bridge to Brisbane fun run might be the perfect example of this spirit, which is why I’m super excited to run it for my second time this year.
There are no sweeping views of Sydney Harbour or glamorous New York streets.
Instead, you haul yourself 65 metres above the brown snake, while admiring container terminals, mangrove mudflats and some of this city’s finest industrial infrastructure.
It’s also very Queensland in that, if you want to do this, you have to immediately take a teaspoon of concrete and harden up.
There’s no gentle first couple of kilometres. The toughest bit is right at the start and is straight up the Gateway, while everyone’s overexcited and running faster than they should be.
But I think the most Queensland thing about the B2B is everyone gets thrown in together. Olympians, world champion boxers, and NRL stars run alongside people dressed as superheroes and minions.
Anna Bligh ran it while serving as Queensland Premier. Last year I ran the 10kms alongside my colleague, Seven News weather presenter Tony Auden.
He beat me by a few minutes, and ‘apparently’ has an injury this year, which means we can’t do a rematch on that distance.
Since last year, a fair bit has changed for me. I ran my first full marathon on the Gold Coast this July.
That was 42.2kms of pure grind, so I’m actually pretty excited to give it my all for a much shorter run and do the 10kms again.
I’ll be wearing a bright pink t-shirt for my nominated charity: The Pyjama Foundation, who do an incredible job supporting foster kids in care.
This year marks the 30th running of Bridge to Brisbane. What began in 1997 as Bridge to Bay, with around 5,000 people, has grown into one of our state’s biggest community events
Thirty editions on, the course and the crowds may have changed, but I think the spirit of it remains the same. People from all walks of life showing up for their city, their community and their mates.
