Carrick’s side were short on inspiration, despite the summer spend in midfield, and the lack of quality in the final third was stark One of the more damning aspects of Manchester United’s tortured rebuild is their inability to multitask.

So much money has been frittered away, pushing United into the ridiculous position of going one position at a time each summer.
