Jaiden Miller escapes from Barkly Work Camp as police warn he may be heading to Alice Springs

Police are hunting an escaped Northern Territory prisoner believed to be heading towards Alice Springs in the latest in a string of jailbreaks and manhunts across the Territory.

Jaiden Miller, 28, escaped from the Barkly Work Camp on Sunday, with police alerted about 5.20pm.

Investigators believe Miller removed his electronic monitoring device after fleeing custody and may now be travelling south towards Alice Springs. He was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and blue shorts.

His escape comes after several high-profile custody breaches in the Northern Territory in recent years.

In January 2022, Ezra Austral, Richard Henwood and Maximus Cutta escaped from the Barkly Work Camp after removing their electronic monitoring devices, triggering a five-day manhunt. All three were later recaptured in Tennant Creek.

In September 2024, two prisoners broke out of the Darwin Watch House in the early hours of the morning before police arrested both men at Daly River later that day.

More recently, a 44-year-old man fled lawful custody at Darwin Local Court on June 5 this year after jumping the dock and running from the building.

Police later tracked him across Darwin as he allegedly tried to evade capture, while a woman was also taken into custody for allegedly helping him.

A month later, Isaac Thompson, 26, escaped while being escorted from an ambulance into Royal Darwin Hospital’s emergency department.

Thompson, who police identified as an associate of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang, ran from custody handcuffed and wearing only shorts and socks. He was captured three days later after a large-scale search.

That escape put the Territory’s corrections system under fresh pressure, with an external review launched and three corrective services officers stood down with pay.

Police are urging Miller to hand himself in and have warned the public not to approach him if he is seen.
