'A little more unique': Wrong design accidentally added to Sydney Marathon medal

Organisers of the 2026 Sydney Marathon have been left red-faced after unveiling a finishers’ medal featuring a stadium in Germany — thousands of kilometres from the race finish line.

The two-sided medal features Sydney landmarks, including the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, but also depicts the distinctive Allianz Arena in Munich.

Marathon organisers have acknowledged the "unfortunate error", with the medal showing the German stadium’s distinctive diamond-patterned exterior rather than the flatter design of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.

"A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers' medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium," a Sydney Marathon spokesperson said.

"We're not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it's certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour."

"Oh, dear. Oh, this is bad," said Instagram account @morningcoffeerun, speculating that someone may have mixed up the stadiums in an online search for Allianz.

"Oh wow, we didn't have that on our bingo card!" it posted on Instagram.

"Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena — Sydney Opera — Unique Architecture — Both are worth a visit!"

The reverse side of the Sydney Marathon medal features a widely praised blue-and-gold design by Indigenous artist Ambrose Killian, who told the Agence-France Presse news agency that he was not involved in creating the Sydney skyline design.

"My artwork and creative contribution to this year's medal was specifically for the lanyard and the front side of the medal only," he said.

"I had no involvement in the design or production of the reverse side of the medal, including the incorrect inclusion of Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, rather than Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

"I take my work very seriously and would like to reiterate that my artwork story, importance and originality remains."

Marathon organisers say they expect a record number of more than 40,000 participants this year, each of whom will earn the medal as a "badge of honour" for completing the 42.2-kilometre course.
