Luke Beveridge highly amused as Collingwood trains on Western Bulldogs’ home ground

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge is quietly fuming over Collingwood’s use of Marvel Stadium, saying the situation was laughable.

Collinwgood was allowed to train on the Bulldogs home ground on Wednesday because they weren’t able to use their own training base, but it has frustrated the Dogs and other Marvel tenant clubs given they can never get access to the ground for training purposes.

“None of the tenant clubs can get on it. We’ve been offered a captain’s run at some point, but we’re not driving down to do that. When we heard about it, I almost fell off my chair. It’s hilarious.”

Asked if the Bulldogs had requested to train there, Beveridge said they looked for opportunities every season.

“You understand (the pushback). There is a lot of traffic on that ground but, in principle, if the tenant clubs can’t train on it ... (laughs) ... I just think it’s hilarious.”

But Beveridge admitted the Dogs didn’t ask to train at Marvel this week.

“So we weren’t told ‘no’ this week so I can’t say we were knocked back,” he said.

“Obviously now that the season is over before finals there is going to be less traffic on it so it’s an easy case to make we didn’t make it but obviously the Pies did and they got on it.”

Speaking on The Agenda Setters on Wednesday, AFL great Nick Riewoldt said the situation was “extraordinary”.

“I know it gets a little bit lost because we’ve got nine teams in Melbourne, 10 in Victoria if we count Geelong, but nine teams in Melbourne,” Riewoldt said.

“But can you imagine anywhere else in the world, a team finishing above another team on the ladder, having to go to their venue to play a home final, and then saying, oh, by the way, our training venue’s not available, do you mind if we borrow yours this week? It’s unbelievable.”

Gun 7NEWS sports reporter Tom Morris said the club’s social media post about it appeared to be lighthearted but there was frustration underneath.

“They’ve been unable to train at Marvel Stadium, the Western Bulldogs, all year, despite significant requests. The St Kilda Football Club has been the same, and being a home tenant, so the Saints and the Dogs have requested training at Marvel, and that’s been knocked back,” Morris said..

“In addition to this, the Dogs finished eighth, Collingwood finished ninth this weekend, the game is at the MCG, and then to add salt into the wound, the Pies get to train at Marvel Stadium two days before they play against the Dogs.
