Ben Stokes officially signs lucrative deal with Big Bash League team Adelaide Strikers

Retired English captain Ben Stokes has officially signed for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL for the upcoming summer

The all-rounder had been weighing up lucrative offers from the Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Renegades and Strikers.

It’s understood the unsuccessful franchises have been informed of his decision.

Stokes is available for the entire tournament and is understood to be on a season salary of around $500,000.

Cricket Australia sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed Stokes’ decision on Tuesday morning.

The game’s governing body has been involved in the play to bring Stokes to Australia, believing it will give the BBL a significant boost and star power.

With the embargo period concluding last week, there is more certainty over what clubs can pay star international signings.

Stokes is seen as the top level marquee acquisition, with Tim Seifort not far behind after a dominant Hundred season in the UK.

Stokes has featured in the BBL before, representing the Renegades in 2014/15. He played four matches and smashed 77 from 37 on debut against the Hobart Hurricanes.

The 35-year-old retired from Test cricket in the English summer, squashing any chance of one last Ashes hurrah in 2027 when Australia travels to the UK for a blockbuster series.
