Mullaloo SLSC joins Sorrento SLSC in early patrols over long weekend after fatal shark attack

In a powerful display of unity and reassurance following the tragic death of local father and grandfather Greg O’Neill, Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club will join Sorrento SLSC in launching volunteer beach patrols in time for the coming long weekend.

The decision to start earlier than scheduled comes in the wake of last Friday’s fatal shark attack, which occurred just 15 metres off Sorrento Beach at around 10.30am.

In a statement released Thursday, Mullaloo SLSC confirmed its volunteers will be on duty from 8am to 11am each day of the long weekend to help provide reassurance to swimmers returning to the water.

“In light of the recent event at Sorrento, in solidarity and to provide reassurance to the community through this safety measure, we too are going to hold patrols from 8am to 11am this long weekend,” the club said.

“We do also want to share the opportunity to support Sorrento SLSC for their patrols this weekend as well.

“It is times like this where we can band together and proudly provide support and safety to our community. We look forward to seeing you in your yellow and reds.”

Mullaloo’s gesture and action follows a moving statement from Sorrento SLSC president Rob Doherty, who on Tuesday confirmed volunteers at his club would also start patrols this weekend as they recognised the profound impact the tragedy has had.

“The past week has been an extremely difficult time for our Club and the wider Sorrento community,” Mr Doherty said.

“I recognise that the tragic incident at Sorrento Beach has affected people in different ways and has understandably prompted questions about ocean safety.

“As one practical step, the Club is commencing its volunteer patrols earlier than scheduled, beginning this long weekend.

“I am grateful to the patrol captains and members who have volunteered their time to provide an increased presence and support our community.

“We will continue to keep members informed of any relevant developments.”

The fatal incident triggered a massive air and water search last Friday after a large great white shark was spotted near the scene. WA Police confirmed Mr O’Neill’s death later that afternoon.

Although Sorrento Beach reopened to the public on Monday, the mood along the coastline has remained solemn.
