Perth beach shut over shark attack days after surfer mauled in Geraldton
A popular Aussie beach has been shut after a suspected shark attack, just days after a surfer was bitten on the leg in a shockingly similar incident hundreds of kilometres up the West Australian coast.
Sorrento Beach, in Perth’s north, was closed to swimmers on Friday after the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development received a report of a possible shark attack about 10.15am.
The ABC reported St John WA received reports of an attack before sending three crews to the scene. A police helicopter also hovered over the area.
Authorities are investigating the report and have urged beachgoers to take extra care around the area.
The scare comes just days after surfer Mel Ismail was attacked while surfing alone at Glenfield Beach in Geraldton.
Mr Ismail lost his foot in the attack, according to 9News, but remained in a stable condition in hospital, facing a long recovery.
The Geraldton attack prompted the closure of a large section of Glenfield Beach, with authorities carrying out patrols in the area.
DPIRD said further information about the Sorrento Beach incident would be provided after it became available.
