Selena Gomez believes addiction to nicotine vapes changed her voice
Singer and actress Selena Gomez has issued a stark warning about the possible dangers of vaping, as she believes her past nicotine addiction has changed her voice.
In a candid Instagram Story shared on Monday, the US pop star admitted quitting the habit had been difficult, despite the lasting impact she feels it has had on her voice.
“I’m not gonna be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot and, just so everyone knows, nicotine is so hard to quit,” Gomez said.
“And I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.
“It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice, so if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it. Just don’t listen.”
Gomez said she had since managed to quit vaping and hoped to stay nicotine-free.
“But I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she said.
Gomez’s warning comes amid ongoing concerns about the health risks associated with vapes, or e-cigarettes, which are not considered safe by Australian health authorities.
In Australia, laws introduced in July 2024 restricted the sale of all vapes and vaping products, regardless of whether they contain nicotine, to pharmacies for the purpose of helping people quit smoking or manage nicotine dependence.
According to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing , even though scientists and public health experts are still learning about e-cigarettes, they do not consider them safe.
Known health risks associated with vaping include persistent coughing, nausea, vomiting, nicotine dependence, respiratory problems and permanent lung damage.
The nicotine found in vapes is also highly addictive and may affect a person’s mental health.
This isn’t the first time the 34-year-old has spoken about changes to her voice, which fans have speculated about for years.
In December 2025, during an Instagram Live, Gomez offered another possible explanation for changes in her voice, revealing her throat sometimes swells internally as a result of her ongoing health struggles with lupus.
