Smart Traveller warns Australians to avoid Saudi Arabia after deadly airport missile attacks

A new warning from Smart Traveller urges all Australians, regardless of the reason, to avoid travelling through Saudi Arabia.

The warning from the Australian government follows a spate of deadly attacks on Saudi Arabian airports over the last week, that left the skies over the country relatively clear of air travel.

The attacks on Saudi Arabia are part of the US – Iran war, with allies on both sides being dragged into the conflict.

Saudi Arabia is a key ally of the United States and has been attacked by the Iran backed Houthis that operate out of Northern Yemen.

Smart Traveller warns the Houthis are threatening to strike airports again and travellers should avoid the region.

“We advise do not travel to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh due to recent security incidents that have disrupted airport operations,” Smart Traveller said in a statement.

”Exercise extreme caution travelling to any other airports. The Houthis have threatened to target Saudi airports and airspace.

”Air travel is significantly disrupted at all major airports, with regular airspace closures, flight cancellations and delays.”

Any traveller who goes through the region is being urged to confirm flights before departing, and consider alternative overland routes via the UAE or Qatar.

”If you remain in Saudi Arabia, be prepared to shelter in place at short notice and ensure you have sufficient food, water and other essential supplies,” Smart Traveller said.

”If a strike occurs, seek shelter in a substantial building and stay away from windows. Falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones also poses a risk.”

The Australian government has also warned travellers against filming or photographing critical infrastructure, military operations, missile launches or drone activity, which is prohibited in Saudi Arabia and can result in criminal prosecution.
