Bugs announce Brisbane headline shows a day after bassist Jordan Brunoli revealed he has ‘months to live’
Brisbane indie favourites Bugs have announced two special live performances a day after bassist Jordan Brunoli delivered a devastating health update.
The 30-year-old on Monday revealed he has only months to live after being diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer in 2025.
Despite more than a year of treatment, the cancer has continued to spread.
“I have spent over a year now trying different chemotherapy drugs, backed by an amazing oncologist and treatment team,” Brunoli posted via the band’s Instagram account.
“Unfortunately, I have a mutation that causes rapid growth of tumours, and none of the treatments have been able to stop the cancer from spreading.
“I am now entering the final chapter of my life after being told in June I had a prognosis of 3-4 months.”
The band on Tuesday announced two special album launch shows for Head Noise, an album Brunoli said had been worked on for the past two years, “through the good and the bad.” It will be released on August 28.
Brunoli and Bugs will take to the stage at Brisbane’s Crowbar on September 10 and 12. The first show will boast support from Ball Park Music frontman Sam Cromack with the second featuring a DJ set from fellow Brisbanites and Triple J favourites Dune Rats. Tickets go on sale on Thursday.
The gigs will be their first since last year’s Saving a Bug’s Life fundraiser.
“These might be the last shows we ever play, so make sure you don’t miss them,” the band said on Instagram.
Ball Park Music and Dune Rats were among those sending support to Brunoli after Monday’s post, which has since gathered almost 9000 likes. Also paying tribute were fellow musicians Ruby Fields, WAAX, Press Club and Eliza and the Delusionals.
Bugs formed in 2014 and released three full-length albums between 2016 and 2022. Their cover of Mallrat’s Charlie marked their Hottest 100 debut in 2020 and was voted in at No.25 on Triple J’s Like a Version countdown three years later.
