Ford Mustang recalled, stop-sale issued in Australia

Ford Australia has grounded a batch of Ford Mustang sports cars, issuing a stop-sale order for unsold examples and a voluntary recall for affected customer vehicles.

A total of 7724 coupes and convertibles built between May 2023 and May 2026 are affected, including almost 500 vehicles currently held in dealer stock.

Parts required to repair the affected vehicles are not expected to arrive in Australia until December.

“Excess heat-shrink on a grounding eyelet in the wiring harness may affect certain vehicle functions, although no related issues or incidents have been reported in Australia,” Ford Australia said in a statement issued to CarExpert.

Importantly, Ford Australia’s directive is a stop-sale and not a do-not-drive notice, meaning current owners can continue driving their vehicles.

An official recall notice has not yet appeared on the Australian Government’s vehicle recalls website but is expected to be published in the coming days.

“Ford will contact affected owners directly about rectification. There are just under 500 vehicles in dealer stock affected, and these will not be sold until the issue is rectified,” the company said.

“Customer safety is Ford’s highest priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” Ford Australia said.

Ford said not all Mustangs are affected. The upcoming Mustang Dark Horse and Dark Horse with T8-Spec Pack are excluded, as is any stock built since the beginning of June 2026.

The issue is separate from an August 27 recall of 4955 Mustangs built between 2024 and 2026 due to a potential windscreen-wiper malfunction.

It also follows a September 2025 stop-sale prompted by an issue that could allow water to enter the body control module, potentially causing the tail-lights and other exterior lighting to fail.

Ford has issued more recall notices than any other brand in Australia so far in 2026. This is the brand’s 20th recall of the year and the Mustang’s third since January.

The Mustang was also Australia’s most recalled vehicle in 2025, when the nameplate appeared in nine recall notices and Ford topped the recall rankings overall.
