Telethon 2026: Perth schoolboy Josh Goodwin raises hundreds at bake sale in memory of late brother Winnie

A Perth schoolboy has turned his unimaginable grief into a powerful force for good in memory of his late younger brother.

Josh Goodwin, a student at Trinity College, rallied his entire Year 5 cohort to host a special Telethon bake sale in memory of his brother, Winston “Winnie” Goodwin.

Winnie tragically passed away just over three months ago, at just 7-years-old, from a rare brain disorder.

Determined to keep his brother’s spirit alive, 10-year-old Josh spearheaded the fundraising drive to support sick children across the state.

“All the money will go to Telethon so we can help children in need and do that in memory of my beautiful brother,” Josh said.

The energy on the day was electric, complete with a special guest appearance by Telethon’s beloved mascot, Fat Cat.

“It felt joyful and happy, because my friends helped and it was nice to have everyone’s encouragement,” Josh said, adding the highlight was “having Fat Cat around.”

When asked if he thought Winnie would be proud of his effort, Josh didn’t hesitate: “100 per cent.”

For Josh’s mother, Barbara Goodwin, watching her son lead the initiative filled her with immense pride.

“Josh is so passionate about sharing Winnie’s story and continuing to educate others about what it means to be a carer for someone living with a disability,” she said.

“What makes me especially proud is the way Josh approaches people with disabilities in general. He doesn’t see the disability first; he sees the person.

“He is committed to making everyone feel included and is always looking for ways to improve accessibility and create opportunities for others to participate.”

Ms Goodwin said events like the bake sale help build empathy among young people while honouring a boy who brought so much light to the world.

“Winnie would have thanked everyone involved for their efforts, with that special sparkle in his eyes,” she said.
