Review: Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular opens to starstruck crowd at Crown Perth

Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular had families and couples feeling in awe as they exited the big top with songs from the famous movie on repeat inside their head.

The 100 minute show opened inside the purpose-built hippodrome at Crown Perth on Friday night to an excited crowd who were ready to be blown away by gravity defying acts backed to the iconic soundtrack from the 2017 film starring Hugh Jack, Zac Efron and Zendaya.

With a crack of a whip from an elusive masked character, it was time for the show begin.

Ruby Clark as Max is about to whisked away into the heart of a circus family her boyfriend Corey stars in with his solo trapeze act — and boy is she in for a journey of fun.

A strong opening to the song Come Alive made for an entertaining watch as main characters Max and The Showman played by Des Flanagan led the charge with the rest of the colourful cast dancing around them.

The show lived up to its circus name by including several traditional acts such as aerial, tumbling, hoops and fire breathers with the all Australian cast exuding talent.

Without giving too much away, one of the most impressive acts of the night was a high wire act performed to the song Tightrope that left everyone in the audience reconsidering their balance skills.

Flanagan was a confident, humorous showman with his twinkling eyes matching his sparking outfit. With a lovely voice, musical fans were surely enthralled to see him perform live following his role as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats.

The entire night was definitely carried by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s movie soundtrack performed by a sensational live band which featured fan favourite songs Iike A Million Dreams, Rewrite The Stars, The Other Side, Never Enough and This Is Me.

At times it is hard to know where to look but it almost doesn’t matter because there is so much beauty within the chaos.

The friendly cast are so engaging in their stunning costumes that their infectious energy leaves you fighting the urge to get up and dance along with them.

Even if you are not familiar with the Hollywood film, you are sure to leave smiling and impressed with the spectacle that presents circus differently.

While it’s no Cirque Du Soleil, Come Alive! provides a fun and energetic night out with a pop-theatre twist that will have your feet tapping along for the entire duration.

The production and creative team certainly deserve to take a bow for creating such an engaging show that brings the spirit of The Greatest Showman to life.
