Labor Federal MP Josh Wilson joins campaign to remove gas giant Woodside’s logo from Fremantle jerseys

Labor Federal MP Josh Wilson has joined a campaign to remove gas giant Woodside’s logo from the front of jerseys worn by the Fremantle Dockers.

The “Get Off My Chest” grassroots campaign is “calling full time” on Woodside as the co-major sponsor of the AFL club, which it has backed for 16 years under a partnership set to expire in 2027.

However, the Fremantle MP has been the latest in a string of big names to sign up to the campaign and be pictured tapping over the oil and gas company’s logo on their fan shirts.

His opposition to Woodside comes despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Energy Minister Chris Bowen have repeatedly said gas will play a key role in both Australia’s and the globe’s transition to a renewable future.

Mr Bowen also said on Friday that gas would be vital to assist Australia’s adoption of AI — as it would be a “perfectly appropriate” backup energy source for data centres when renewable energy isn’t generating enough electricity due to being weather-condition dependant.

“Gas can be used for firming. Gas is perfectly appropriate for that,” Mr Bowen, who is the senior climate minister to Mr Wilson, said.

“You must bring your own renewable energy to power the data centre on a normal operating basis. Gas can be used as a backup.”
