New Today show hosts announced after Sarah Abo confirms departure
Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort have been announced as the new hosts of the Today show after Sarah Abo confirmed this week she was leaving the show.
“We can announce that Sylvia Jeffries and Tom Steinfort have been named the new hosts of Today in 2027. With a collective four decades of experience, their appointments mark a new era for the program,” newsreader Jayne Azzopardi said during a news update.
“There are a lot of mixed feelings for everyone today. I know that here on the floor for you at home as well,” she added.
“But I know that Tom and I are going to work really, really hard to carry on the amazing work of Sarah, of Karl [Stefanovic], of the whole team, everything they’ve been doing for years for you, our viewers. And yes, 2027 is going to be a huge year.”
“I’m stoked to be doing it alongside you, and yeah, I’m just thrilled to be part of such an iconic show.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Abo said: “Words can’t express how grateful I am to our viewers for letting me into your homes to be part of your morning routine. Without you, there is no Today show.
“Together with 60 Minutes , I’ve spent my time at Nine chasing stories, travelling and reporting from all over the world, interviewing some incredible and inspiring people from all walks of life.”
Before the new hosting team was announced, Abo was farewelled on the show.
“Sarah will always be such a much loved part of this Today family, no matter what,” Jeffreys said.
“And talking to her last night, I know that she’s been feeling so much love from you, our wonderful viewers. After she shared that news and thanked Australia for welcoming her into your homes and letting her be part of your every morning routine.
Jeffreys thanked for Abo “giving so much of yourself to this show and for being such a joy to share our mornings with.
“But of course now that belongs to beautiful [son] Sonny and [partner] Cyrus.”
The program also played a greatest hits package of Abo’s time on show with former host Karl Stefanovic, with clips of her interviewing the prime minister and former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer, as well as celebrities.
Abo also posted a video message on her Instagram account yesterday announcing her departure from Today and Nine. In the video she said “loved every minute” and the Today crew felt like family. She also thanked the viewers at home for “being incredibly supportive”.
