Brisbane mum left ‘horrified’ after discovering shard of glass in bread slice

A Brisbane mum has been left “horrified” after her daughter discovered a glass shard pressed into a slice of Tip Top bread bought from Woolworths.

The mother, identified only as Laura, told 9News she made her daughter a toastie only for the seven-year-old to return it to her in tears.

She says the youngster discovered a small shard of glass in the bread, which appeared to have been pressed into one of the slices.

While she thankfully made the unwanted find before biting into the affected part, Laura told 9News the girl was “shaking and crying” as a result of the incident.

She said the bread, a Tip Top The One loaf, had been purchased from the Moorooka branch of Woolworths.

Now, both the supermarket chain and the bread producers say investigations are under way into how the glass came to be in the bread.

“Woolworths takes food safety seriously and we are concerned by this customer report,” a Woolworths spokesman said.

“We are investigating this with Tip Top as a priority but are not aware of any similar reports of this nature.”

A spokesman for George Weston Foods, the owners of Tip Top, confirmed to 9News that its own probe is under way.

“All Tip Top baking facilities have robust food safety and quality assurance processes in place (including sieve controls for all ingredients) to ensure no contaminants are present at the time of dispatch,” the spokesman said in a statement.

“Consumer safety is paramount at Tip Top, and we are taking this incident very seriously.

“We are reaching out to the customer to recover the product so appropriate investigation can be conducted.”
