Sydney NDIS provider director, 36, charged over alleged $1.89m fraud

The director of a Sydney NDIS provider has been charged over an alleged $1.89 million fraud involving taxpayer-funded disability services.

The 36-year-old man was arrested at a police station on Thursday following an investigation launched in June 2024.

Police allege he submitted fraudulent invoices totalling about $1.89 million for services that were never provided between March 2020 and January 2024.

NSW Police and the NSW Crime Commission (NSWCC) executed search warrants at multiple locations across Sydney in April last year.

Restraining and seizure orders were then sought over 38 properties and 16 vehicles with a combined value of more than $40 million.

The man was banned by the NDIS Commission in May last year, while the registered NDIS provider linked to him was permanently banned.

He has been charged with 12 counts of dishonestly obtaining a gain from a Commonwealth entity and one count of intentionally dealing with proceeds of crime worth $1 million or more.

The offences carry maximum penalties of 10 and 25 years in prison respectively.

AFP Detective Superintendent Timothy Underhill said authorities would allege the matter involved a deliberate attempt to exploit a scheme designed to support some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

“Those who seek to exploit government programs for personal gain are warned agencies across Australia are working together to identify offending and take action against those responsible,” Underhill said.

“Fraud undermines the integrity of the NDIS and diverts funding intended to support Australians living with disability.”

An NDIA spokeswoman said the Fraud Fusion Taskforce was working to protect NDIS participants and the services they rely on.

“Smarter systems, sharper intelligence and coordinated action are catching the people seeking to exploit the NDIS,” she said.

Anyone with information about suspected fraud involving the NDIS should contact the NDIS fraud reporting and scams helpline on 1800 650 717.
