Wikileaks founder Julian Assange announces third baby with wife Stella

Julian Assange , founder of whistleblower platform Wikileaks, has announced he and his wife Stella Assange are having their third child after he was freed from jail.

The 55-year-old’s wife took to social media to share the “happy news” with a photo of the couple late on Monday.

“This new life would not have been possible without all those who fought to bring (Assange) home,” Stella wrote in a post to X.

“This new life is thanks to everyone who fought for my freedom,” he wrote.

It was just the third post that Assange had made since returning to social media platform X after an eight-year hiatus.

The news comes just over two years since he was freed following a 14-year-long legal battle against espionage charges.

Following his publication of classified US documents in 2010 and 2011, Assange spent seven years at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he was granted asylum on the grounds of political persecution as he avoided extradition to Sweden amid a rape investigation that was later dropped by Swedish authorities.

He spent the next five years in a high-security UK prison fighting extradition to the US.

He pleaded guilty to the Espionage Act in a US court in the Northern Mariana Islands as part of a plea deal for his freedom in 2024.

While admitting guilt, Assange did note he believed it contradicted the US constitution’s First Amendment protecting free speech.

Stella told Sunrise at the time that reuniting with Assange was the “happiest day of my life”, after being questioned about the couple’s long kiss after her husband landed in Canberra.

“I was so happy to see him, and we were able to spend our first few moments together in freedom. The reception has been so extraordinary,” Stella said.
