Classic Holden Monaro meets tragic end in Brisbane crash

A classic Holden Monaro has met its untimely end in a crash over the weekend.

On Sunday, August 23, emergency services were called to a collision in the suburb of Eagle Farm on Brisbane's northside.

A gold 1970 Holden Monaro left the roadway and collided with a tree on Kingsford Smith Drive. Images shared widely on social media show the tree severely impacted the driver's side of the cabin.

The driver, a 52-year-old man from Jindalee, was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition. According to the Queensland Police Service, he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Low-resolution security camera footage shared by Brisbane City News on Facebook shows the vehicle appearing to travel alongside another classic car before leaving the roadway.

The QPS' Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the crash and urges anybody who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage to contact the police, quoting the reference number QP2601643006.

The crashed vehicle appears to be a HG Monaro, launched in 1970 as the final update of the first-generation Monaro that had debuted in 1968.

HG Monaro coupes in top GTS 350 spec, which used a Chevrolet-sourced 5.7-litre V8, have changed hands for as much as $220,000. As recently as this year, an automatic example was sold at auction for $142,000.

The Monaro crashed in Eagle Farm may have had a more powerful engine than what came from the factory, given its 'LSX 427' numberplate.
