WA Police officer Nickolas Wayne Peake enters plea over baby assault charge

A serving police officer has pleaded guilty to assaulting his newborn baby.

Nickolas Wayne Peake, 30, appeared before Midland Magistrates Court in Perth on Thursday charged over the shocking crime .

During the brief appearance, he pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated common assault.

WA Police said the incident happened in Stratton over the weekend but did not reveal specific details about it in court.

The five-week-old girl was taken to Perth Children’s Hospital as a precaution, and Peake was charged by child abuse squad detectives on Sunday.

Peake secured bail and declined to comment outside court, going straight into a waiting car.

He has been stood down from police duties and will be sentenced in October.

The maximum penalty for the charge is up to three years in prison or a $36,000 fine.
