Perth police reveal spike in motorcycle thefts linked to online marketplaces after mum confronts alleged intruders

A mother has been left “disturbed and shaken” after coming face to face with strangers who allegedly broke into her property to steal a motorbike.

The woman was at home with her children in Perth ’s northern suburbs when she went to investigate strange noises coming from her garage.

Security vision shared by police showed the trio, including one who was sitting on an off-road motorbike, flee empty-handed when startled.

Police allege the intruders opened the garage door by hand after manipulating an emergency release mechanism.

“Although on this occasion a police response enabled two offenders to be apprehended and charged, this incident (had) a huge impact on the victim,” Acting Inspector Darryl Fuller said on Monday.

“She was left disturbed and shaken and no one should feel unsafe in their own home.”

Authorities have reported a surge in thefts from homes across metropolitan Perth in 2026, with motorcycles and other high-end valuables among the loot.

Between January and late June, officers were able to recover 55 motorcycles that had been reported stolen and arrested 36 people for their alleged involvement in the bike thefts and associated burglaries.

Motorbikes are considered a “high-value commodity” because they are transportable and can be sold for parts.

Police have responded to the increase in crime with patrols, targeted operations and community engagement efforts.

“The offenders can strike at any time once they know where these items are held,” Fuller said.

“These offenders are incredibly brazen and willing to do whatever it takes to obtain that property.”

Many of the thefts have been linked to online marketplace listings, prompting warnings from authorities.

“Avoid photos that reveal the item’s location. Consider meeting potential buyers in public rather than at your home.
