Two men charged in Tasmania’s ‘largest-ever’ meth seizure

A huge haul of methamphetamine has allegedly been snared by Tasmania Police in what is believed to be the state’s largest-ever ice bust.

Police allegedly seized bags of the drug after pulling over two vehicles close to a beach car park near Burnie on Friday.

The haul, which police say is potentially the state’s biggest ever, weighed 17kg – roughly the same weight as a fully-grown adult dingo.

Following the bust, two men were taken into custody – a 40-year-old from NSW and a 41-year-old from Hobart.

Police allege the Hobart man is a member of an outlaw motorcycle group, with the drug haul estimated to have a street value of $8.5m.

The two men have been charged with trafficking in controlled substance and are due to appear at Devonport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby described the alleged seizure as “an outstanding result”.

“The (alleged) seizure of these 17kg of methamphetamine is one of the most significant seizures ever by Tasmania Police for illicit drugs,” he said.

“We know by seizing the drugs, it will prevent catastrophic harm to individuals and the broader community.

“Although this (alleged) seizure is an outstanding result, we will be continuing to take steps against the broader criminal network, both in Australia and overseas, whom participated in this importation and we anticipate further arrests.”

Anybody with further information regarding drug trafficking should contact police on 131 444 or Crimes Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
