Sydney teen’s hand almost amputated in alleged knife attack

A Sydney teenager’s hand was nearly chopped off in an inner-city carpark on Wednesday night in an attack allegedly orchestrated by a child who was out on bail at the time.

Officers discovered the injured 17-year-old on Redfern Oval about 6pm on Wednesday with his hand barely attached to his wrist, police said.

The near-complete amputation allegedly occurred in a carpark on Morehead Avenue, two blocks from the football ground. Police were told the offender used a knife to hack at the teen’s hand before escaping.

Paramedics transported the 17-year-old to hospital, where medics will work to reattach his hand. He was treated in a stable condition.

Just after midnight, police stopped a car that was travelling along Redfern Street – the road at Redfern Oval’s northern edge – and arrested a 15-year-old boy nearby.

The child was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with wounding another person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and breaching his bail.

He spent the night behind bars ahead of an appearance in children’s court on Thursday.
