Haines is in hospital with severe lower body injuries, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that she suffered them in an allegedly deliberate “attack”.
Nugent’s alleged motive remains unclear, but a full investigation has been launched, with the AFP, ASIO, Victorian Police and the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team all engaged in the probe.
He is known to police and was allegedly involved in a road rage incident in April, when he is accused of ramming another car and attacking the driver with a hammer.
It is understood he will undergo a mental health assessment before police interview him about the alleged attack on Haines.
