Emergency crews are on their way to check for survivors after authorities confirmed the aircraft had crashed off the Northern Territory coast in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
NT Police have confirmed receiving reports of a "small aircraft crash in waters near Angurugu", off Groote Eylandt about 11.40am on Tuesday.
A flight tracker site showed an Australian Maritime Safety Authority aircraft circling in the area.
"Members are currently responding to the incident," a police statement said.
"Police are working to confirm the circumstances of the crash and the number of people involved."
