Breakdown underscores archaic state of Sydney’s rail infrastructure

A sagging wire brought Sydney’s T1 North Shore Line to a halt and wreaked havoc on tens of thousands of commuters in another display of how, when it comes to our city’s rail network, little things can ruin the best-laid plans.

The loss of tension in an overhead wire south of Chatswood station late on Monday night resulted in the cancellation of city-bound services from Gordon to North Sydney the following morning. But it did not stop there, with knock-on effects on the T9 Northern Line between Hornsby and Strathfield and a reduction in services on the T1 Western line.

The latest failure comes less than two weeks after overhead wiring fell onto a train near Redfern , causing power outages across critical sections of the rail network and major disruptions during the evening peak. Transport for NSW is investigating the cause of the failure on the T1 line.

These wiring faults follow a scathing review of Sydney’s train network , sparked by another wiring fault in May 2025 that caused days of delays.

Sydney’s geriatric train network – the first version of the North Shore line was built in the 1890s – is a stark contrast to the efficient, fast, new metro, which has given the city a glimpse of how good mass transport can be.

The Minns government is fiscally conservative and has ensured NSW is better off than most other states. It is pushing ahead with Coalition-initiated plans for the Metro West. The major new city-shaping line is being carved out over 24 kilometres between Sydney’s central business district and Westmead, and there is the new rail line from St Marys to Western Sydney Airport. Both leave a gigantic hole in the capital works budget. It has also said it is conscious of the need to invest in old heavy rail.

Incidents such as Tuesday’s suggest the government faces a significant challenge to ensure the city has the transport infrastructure it needs to ensure it can cope with bold new housing targets.

Last December, the Minns government released its draft Sydney Plan, projecting 20 years ahead with 6.5 million residents around more than 40 “interconnected centres” to provide most jobs and services. Given such massive growth, the demand for new infrastructure is clear.

The Minns government should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time by planning for new extensions and projects while also boosting maintenance and reliability on the existing network.

Tuesday’s T1 North Shore Line forced commuters, students and others forced to wait hours for emergency buses or pay Uber prices to the CBD. The best ways to prevent repetition and stop further catastrophic interruptions to service are to properly fund maintenance programs and invest in assets renewal.

There is no doubt the Sydney train system remains archaic. It is incumbent on the government to explain how its vision for a bigger, modern world city can evolve with a transport network that, wedged between the old and the new, is proving so vulnerable to costly attacks by lilliputian failures.
