Australian apartment hotel Quest reveals customer data breach after hackers accessed database
Customers of one of Australia’s biggest hotel chains have been warned their personal details may have been exposed after hackers gained unauthorised access to a database through an external service provider.
Apartment hotel chain Quest told affected customers it identified the unauthorised access on Monday, August 17, and had immediately taken steps to contain the incident.
“The incident arose from a vulnerability through our third party service provider,” Quest told customers in an email.
The company said it was carrying out a forensic investigation to determine exactly what information was accessed and the extent of the breach.
The affected records date from before June 2025 and include customers’ full names and email addresses and/or other contact details.
“ A small number of data entries also involve date of birth,” Quest said.
7NEWS understands about 1.7 million guests were exposed overall, with the dates of birth of up to 1,700 guests also exposed.
“We have contacted those we have identified as potentially affected to notify them and provide support, and we will continue to do so if our investigation identifies any further impact,” Quest said.
“If you do not receive a notification from us, it is unlikely that your personal information has been affected.”
The company has urged customers to remain vigilant for unexpected calls, texts or emails, particularly messages asking them to confirm personal information, click links or make payments.
The breach has prompted a number of Quest customers to discuss the notifications on social media, with numerous people saying they had received emails from the hotel chain.
One customer said they received the email in relation to several client bookings they had made during the affected period, while others said they had received notifications from Quest overnight or on Wednesday morning.
Quest operates more than 160 properties across Australasia, including more than 120 in Australia.
