Queensland man Awlad Hossain accused of paying $90,000 to remove his name from police records after wife’s suspicious overseas death

Two years after his estranged wife’s body was found overseas, a Queensland man has been arrested over an alleged bribery plot aimed at influencing the investigation into her death.

Awlad Hossain, 51, allegedly transferred more than $90,000 to people in Bangladesh over two years, instructing them to bribe public officials and have his name removed from police records.

Rehana Parvin was reported missing to Queensland Police in September 2024, before Bangladeshi authorities located her body the following day.

Forensic testing confirmed her identity, while authorities deemed her death suspicious.

The woman’s dual Australian-Bangladeshi citizenship triggered a federal investigation.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) investigators allege the man made multiple payments between September 2024 and September 2026.

“There was some suggestion that part of the payments were intended for police,” AFP Commander Stephen Jay said.

However, the alleged attempts to influence the investigation had not succeeded.

“I would like to emphasise the material we have obtained indicates the alleged attempts to influence the criminal investigation in Bangladesh were not successful,” he said.

“We have not seen any change in relation to the support provided to us by Bangladesh police — we remain really comfortable with the excellent co-operation we’ve had from Bangladesh authorities.”

The AFP alleges the payments were intended to have the man’s name removed from police records.

Investigators seized international transaction records and bank records from financial institutions in Sydney and Brisbane .

The Redbank Plains man was arrested at a friend’s home in nearby Goodna, Ipswich , on Monday.
