British Museum slammed over mummy warning

British Museum slammed over mummy warning

The British Museum has been accused of going overboard after warning visitors that an ancient Egypt tour features mummies.

Ticket-holders for the £35 Out-of-hours tour: Life and death in ancient Egypt are told that the experience "visits displays that include human remains", The Sun reports.

The warning adds that the attraction will "explore the preparation of the deceased for burial, including mummification".

The 9am tour also examines how funerary remains can reveal details about the lives of ancient Egyptians.

The museum, which attracts more than six million visitors a year, holds more than 6,000 human remains and says they are treated "with respect and dignity".

History enthusiast Simon Fisher, 52, spotted the warning while trying to book the tour.

The former academic, from Slough, Berkshire, told the publication: "I wonder what the ancient civilisations would make of today’s woke nonsense.

"The warning seems incredibly preachy and written for the sake of it. It’s complete overkill."

The alert comes amid growing controversy around warnings issued before cultural works and performances.

London’s National Theatre previously warned audiences about "grief, suicide and mental illness" in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Cambridge University also sparked criticism after reportedly attaching a "themes of violence" warning to Little Red Riding Hood.
