Tesla Cybercab robotaxi following Cybertruck to Australia

Tesla Cybercab robotaxi following Cybertruck to Australia

The Tesla Cybercab is coming to Australia, but you won't be able to hail one for a ride.

Instead, the Cybercab will tour Tesla locations across Australia and New Zealand starting this year and continuing into 2027.

Tesla has said the tour isn't a launch of the robotaxi, but rather is intended to give Australians and Kiwis "a first look at the vehicle designed for a driverless future and a clear reminder that the intelligence behind it is already in Tesla showrooms".

The company has confirmed the local Cybercab tour will commence next Monday (September 21) in Sydney, before heading to Brisbane and the Gold Coast in October, then Canberra later that month.

It will then travel to Melbourne and Adelaide in November, before making its final Australian stop in Perth in December. It'll then head across the ditch to Auckland in 2027.

The company doesn't appear to be showing off the self-driving technology of the Cybercab, though it will demonstrate Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the Model 3 and Model Y . The functionality is already available in those vehicles here through a subscription.

“Cybercab is the destination. Model 3 and Model Y are how Australians and New Zealanders get there today,” said Tesla country director Thom Drew.

“When people see Cybercab at our locations, we want them to understand they are looking at the future of the same autonomous technology they can already experience with Full Self Driving (Supervised).”

The autonomous Cybercab coupe has already been spied in New Zealand, undergoing cold-weather testing .

It's already doing robotaxi duty in Austin, Texas, where the American automaker is headquartered.

Unusually for a robotaxi – and in sharp contrast with electric Chevrolet Bolt and Jaguar I-Pace models that have been used by the likes of Waymo – the Cybercab is a two-seat, three-door hatchback coupe.

Revealed in October 2024, the Cybercab has a 163kW front-mounted electric motor and a 48kWh battery, expected to give it around 450km of range under the stricter US EPA standard. It's able to be charged using wireless inductive charging, with no plug necessary.

Much as it's doing with the Cybercab, Tesla brought a Cybertruck to Australia in 2024, with the left-hand drive electric ute travelling across the country throughout the year. By this point, Tesla had stopped accepting Australian deposits for the controversial electric pickup, which still has yet to be confirmed for right-hand drive production.
