Merrylands couple left waiting for repairs six months after police car crashes into home

A western Sydney couple say their home remains damaged more than six months after a police vehicle responding under lights and sirens crashed into the property.

Frank and Sylvia told A Current Affair it was the second time a police vehicle had struck their Merrylands home in about two years.

The latest crash happened about 5pm on March 9 when officers from Cumberland Police Area Command responded to a reported assault in Guildford West.

NSW Police said the vehicle left the road and crashed into the house on Holroyd Rd at Merrylands.

No injuries were reported. Police said officers were not involved in a pursuit and no other vehicles were involved.

Footage aired by A Current Affair shows the police wagon crossing the road before crashing into the home and partially collapsing the garage.

Sylvia said she had been inside the home with her granddaughter shortly before the crash, but the child left with her daughter only minutes before.

“I stood there, and I thought they killed my family, and I couldn’t get past that until they rang me and I knew that they were alive, and they were OK,” she said.

The crash also damaged water pipes and forced emergency crews to switch off power to the property, A Current Affair reported.

The program reported the first incident occurred during a police pursuit through Merrylands in 2024 and caused less serious damage, which Sylvia said was dealt with by their insurer.

More than six months after the latest crash, Frank and Sylvia say the property remains damaged.

“This is on the police. They should actually be working with my insurance to get this house fixed and restored the way it was,” Sylvia said.

NSW Police said on Wednesday the claim had been referred to the force’s insurer.

Police said following the March crash they were “working with its insurance provider to arrange the necessary repairs”.
