Humpback whale beaches itself in Port Kennedy, DBCA responds to potentially sick animal amid fears of sharks

A whale has beached itself in Port Kennedy, prompting a major response from authorities and forcing the closure of a beach.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said they were responding after a humpback whale became stranded on a sand back in Port Kennedy.

“DBCA officers are responding to a humpback whale that has stranded on a sand bank in shallow water in Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Port Kennedy,” a spokesperson said.

“DBCA officers are liaising with veterinarians to assess the whale’s health and determine the most appropriate course of action.

“Port Kennedy beach is being closed to the public. It is likely the whale will attract sharks to the area.”

The DBCA advises people to keep a safe distance from sick or injured marine mammals, which can reduce the risk of harm to the public and avoid stressing the animal further.

A video posted online showed three members of the public wading in water near the large sea creature.
