Car involved in 'drive-bys' before underworld shooting

A car was captured on security camera circling the home of Fadi Haddara before the alleged gangland figure was gunned down and left for dead in a pool of his own blood.

Victoria Police released footage on Tuesday in its investigation of the shooting of the 48-year-old outside his Altona North home in Melbourne's suburban inner west about 7.45pm on Sunday.

It shows a white Holden Commodore sedan with a rear spoiler slowly driving past Haddara's home several times between 4.48pm and 5.45pm that day.

Investigators also believe the car was parked in the vicinity for an extended period.

Within hours of the "drive-bys", a family member discovered Haddara near his BMW with gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Several neighbours called triple-zero after hearing loud bangs, police said.

While investigators said the connection between the car and shooting was "unknown", they want to interview anyone who can identify the vehicle and its owner or occupants.

Drivers with dash-cam footage travelling through the Marigold Avenue area on Sunday afternoon and evening have also been urged to come forward.

Investigators were on Monday afternoon waiting to interview Haddara, who was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

He is alleged to be the head of his namesake family clan, linked to Melbourne's illicit tobacco trade.

The Haddara group is reported to have once been a rival of a syndicate led by tobacco kingpin Kazem Hamad.

Hamad's group The Commission has been connected to a series of firebombings in Victoria while fighting for control of importation and distribution of illicit tobacco.

Despite recently being jailed for life in Iraq after he was deported from Australia, police weren't ruling out the possibility of Hamad's group being behind the shooting.

Haddara's brother Mohammed was killed in a shooting in 2009, a short distance from the site of Sunday's attack.
