Australian woman dies after falling from cliff at hotspot outside Bali
An Australian woman has died after falling from a cliff at a busy tourist spot near Bali.
The woman died on Saturday morning on Penida Island, 30km east of central Denpasar.
Local media reports the 29-year-old woman was from Queensland, and fell some 80 metres from the cliff at busy Kelingking Beach, in the Klungkung regency (district).
A Klungkung Police spokesman said in a statement about 8am a lifeguard was alerted to a person stranded on the clifftop south of the popular beach.
“When the victim fell to the beach, she was found already deceased,” the police spokesman said.
Later in hospital, her injuries were found to include a fractured left arm, a leg fracture, a laceration to her right leg and multiple injuries caused by contact with rocks along the cliff, the Bali Times reports.
Images from the scene show dozens of uniformed police, search and rescue crew members and army members beginning to climb up very steep stairs from the beach, and then later carrying a stretcher through the streets, assisted by at least one westerner.
The Bali Times also reports her body was being transferred to a larger hospital across on the north side of Penida Island for the Australian embassy to make arrangements.
Kelingking Beach is a very popular tourist spot, with scores of people hiking up the cliffs each day to take photos, or trekking down to the beach.
