Just months after Mandurah swan vape death another dies as a result of human actions
Just months after the deliberate killing of a black swan shocked Mandurah the city’s beloved birds are yet again paying the price for human actions.
At the weekend WA Seabird Rescue were called out to rescue a swan with an injured wing in Mandurah.
When rescuers arrived they found the mother swan had fishing line entangled around her wing and feet.
They then made the grim discovery that the fishing line wrapped around the mother swan was also attached to the dead body of one of it’s cygnets.
Rescuers took the bird to WA Wildlife for vet assessment and treatment for injuries to her wing.
They aim for the mother to be released back with her family as soon as possible as cygnets have a better chance at survival if raised by both parents.
The group had a strong message for the community , urging them to keep their eyes open.
“We ask members of the community to please keep an eye out for entangled wildlife as the weather warms up and more folks take to our waterways to fish,” they wrote on Facebook.
“If you are the parent of a child who enjoys fishing, please make sure that you have taught your child responsible fishing practices and supervise them.
“Please do not cast near birds and always clean up your line and tackle. If you do accidentally hook a bird - do not cut the line.”
This comes after a pair of teenagers were charged with animal cruelty after forcing a different black swan captured in the Mandurah estuary to inhale vape smoke.
