Mindy Kaling sitcom Not Suitable For Work gets axed after 9 episodes

Mindy Kaling's sitcom Not Suitable For Work has been cancelled after just one season.

The 47-year-old star created the Hulu comedy, which launched in June and ran for nine episodes focused on "five work-obsessed 20-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness".

Now, Variety has reported that Hulu won't be moving forward with a second season.

It's understood that Warner Bros. TV, which produces the comedy, are keen to shop the series to possible new homes.

Not Safe For Work starred Ella Hunt, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay and Jay Ellis as the group of pals, who lived in "Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill".

The show boasted a number of recurring guest stars too, including Greg Germann, Constance Wu, Victor Farber, Laura Bell Bundy, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suarez and Michael Benjamin Washington.

The series marked Mindy's first sole creator credit since The Mindy Project.

Nicholas previously described the sitcom as "hilarious and refreshing", arguing that "a lot of the comedies put out nowadays are so angled at Gen Z to the point where it’s like scrolling on Instagram".

He added to The Hollywood Reporter: "It has that vintage … not to make the comparison, but from the jump, it’s always had a bit of a Friends vibe.

“That’s a giant to compare it to, but that’s initially how I felt being part of it. It has a more modern take on it. It’s work-obsessed kids trying to make their way in New York.”

Meanwhile, Mindy recently reflected on the moment she got fired from her own sitcom.

Before finding fame in The Office and The Mindy Project, she and college friend and co-writer Brenda Withers were working on a show about their real life friendship, only for bosses to recast them with "much better-looking actors".

She told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’ve had some bad experiences in Hollywood, but this was the worst experience…

"They [The WB] loved the idea of a show based on our friendship [her and Brenda Withers, her college friend with whom she co-wrote Matt and Ben], but they didn’t want us to play the leads.
