Today weatherman Tim Davies quits breakfast show after seven years

Today show weatherman Tim Davies announced on Friday morning he was leaving the program, after seven years on air.

“This seems like the right time to step back, enjoy a sleep-in, take a break without a camera crew and prepare for my next adventure,” said Davies, who added that he had the best job on TV, delivering “good news, good vibes and a smile with each story”.

Nine’s director of morning television Steven Burling paid tribute to Davies saying he was a “much loved” member of the team who “leaves enormous shoes to fill”.

“We are fully supportive of Tim laying down some roots after seven years of living out of a suitcase. I’d like to thank Tim for all he’s contributed to the show. I know the team and the audience will greatly miss him,” Burling said.

A spokesperson for Nine confirmed Davies was not sacked, but his departure comes at a tumultuous time for the breakfast show.

Today has been struggling in the ratings since the departure of its longtime host Karl Stefanovic, who was sacked in June after he interviewed convicted fraudster and right-wing agitator Tommy Robinson on his podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show .

Stefanovic’s former co-host Sarah Abo is also absent from the Today desk, having gone on maternity leave in July, but she is expected to return to the show.

A rotating line-up of Nine personalities has been filling in for the pair, including former Sunrise host Samantha Armytage, who joined Nine in 2024 after 21 years at Seven. Speculation is rife that Armytage will join the show full-time, but the bigger question is over who will replace Stefanovic.

Nine, which historically recruits such high-profile positions internally, has been road-testing various familiar faces, including 9News Melbourne’s Tom Steinfort, who co-hosted Today with Armytage recently. Other names in the mix include Joel Dry, current Today Extra host David Campbell, Nine sport presenter James Bracey, sport reporter Michael Atkinson and David Woiwod, who is currently Seven’s Weekend Sunrise co-host.

However, as noted previously, audiences and advertisers are seeking fresh faces across other platforms, such as social media and podcasts, so the network faces some tricky choices.

Davies will depart Today – which is lagging further behind rival Sunrise in the ratings – (288,000 national average viewers for Today on Thursday, compared with Sunrise ’s 456,000) on September 18, which is the day after Nine’s Upfront event, where the network traditionally unveils its program and talent line-up for the coming year.
