Australian man arrested in Bali after allegedly being filmed having sex on driveway

An Australian man has been arrested after allegedly being caught having sex on a local’s driveway in Bali.

The 27-year-old was allegedly caught in the act by a passer-by on August 22, and CCTV of the incident led police to arrest the man at Denpasar Airport on Tuesday before he boarded a plane to Brisbane.

NewsWire understands the man is from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Multiple family members of the man were unable to verify their relative was involved and no contact could be established to anyone connected to his Queensland business.

Indonesia enacted strict new laws in January, which include maximum 12-month prison terms for sex outside of marriage – a statute which applies to tourists as well.

But the law says sex outside marriage will only be prosecuted if a family member files a formal complaint.

The country’s criminal code also carries a 24-month maximum sentence for public indecency.

Analysis by various global human rights agencies says there is a specific offence for sexual intercourse in public, though the penalty is not clear. Other third party analysis of the laws say public indecency covers public sexual intercourse. Tourists are regularly given long-term or permanent travel bans by the Indonesian government after criminal conviction.

This week’s incident involving the 27-year-old Australian man was filmed by a security camera at the home about 15km north of Kuta.

North Kuta police commander Ketut Sukadana said indecent acts had “the potential to cause public concern”.

“Particularly among the residents of Tibubeneng, and may negatively affect the image of security and tourism in the North Kuta area if the matter is not addressed and handled seriously by taking firm action against the perpetrators, whether under local customary law or national law,” he said in a statement.

The footage shows the topless man, and a woman in a bikini who local police say is also a tourist, walking up a residential driveway to a half-open security gate. The pair are filmed having sex.

At one point, a woman turns to walk up the driveway, freezes as she sees the pair, and then leaves.

The pair continue to have sex and walk away, with the whole encounter lasting about 15 minutes.
