Wild moment police take down alleged knife-wielding man at NSW airport

Wild footage has emerged of an alleged knife-wielding man who forced his way into a restricted area at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport.

Police were called to the airport after a 38-year-old man entered a controlled-access area just after 9.30am on Tuesday.

He was issued with a move on direction and left, but returned to the airport a short time later.

The man was arrested and allegedly assaulted a police officer who was injured and treated by paramedics at the scene.

Footage shows the 38-year-old shouting “get off me” as officers try to restrain him and move him into the back of a police van.

A NSW Police spokesman said a constable sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated by paramedics.

“The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for an assessment under police guard,” a spokesman said.

The 38-year-old was released from hospital and charged with several offences over the incident.

He was charged with destroying or damaging property less than $2000, custody of a knife in a public place, refusing or failing to comply with a direction, assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, hindering or resisting a police officer and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail and is due to face the Bail Division Court on Tuesday.
