Emergency services rush to Sorrento Beach in Perth after suspected shark attack

Emergency services have rushed to a popular beach in Perth to reports of a swimmer in distress amid fears of a shark attack.

Police and paramedics were on scene at Sorrento Beach, in Perth’s north, about 10.30am on Friday.

A police helicopter and boat were also among the resources sent to the scene, WA Police told 7NEWS.com.au.

It comes just days after 56-year-old surfer Mel Ismail was mauled by a shark at Glenfield Beach in Geraldton, 420km north of Perth , on Monday.

7NEWS understands another surfer dragged the father, Mel Ismail, to shore before a group of teenagers provided first aid and used a surfboard leg rope as a makeshift tourniquet to help save the local firefighter’s life.

He suffered extensive injuries to his right led, which had to be amputated below the shin.
