Toyota Australia fixing HiLux defect that could affect up to 17,000 utes

Toyota Australia has announced a Customer Service Exercise (CSE) covering 16,995 examples of the Toyota HiLux Rogue dual-cab ute produced between 2020 and 2024, to rectify an issue with their standard power-operated roller cover.

“The involved vehicles are equipped with a power operated roller cover which may become jammed or unable to be opened or closed. If this occurs, the motor may remain active, possibly causing it to overheat,” Toyota Australia said in a statement.

“For all involved vehicles, Toyota Dealers will inspect the Roller Cover motor for evidence of overheating, replace if required, then inspect/adjust Roller Cover track width, update the ECU [Electronic Control Unit] software and install metal drive pin connectors (if required).”

Toyota Australia said it will contact owners of all affected vehicles to organise a fix, which may take up to 3.5 hours to complete.

Toyota cautioned some vehicles may need to remain with dealers for longer depending on workshop scheduling.

The fix includes new software designed to improve the roller cover’s limit-switch logic and reduce the risk of the motor overheating.

It will also add functionality allowing the roller cover to be opened and closed using the vehicle’s key fob or the lock/unlock buttons on the driver’s door trim switch.
