Gardening experts share tips for creating the perfect spring garden

Tree buds are beginning to swell and the noses of plants are pushing through the ground.

This time of year leaves many of us itching to get stuck into our own gardens.

If you’re wondering where to start, now is the time to lay the foundation for your garden to come.

Liam Clarke, a landscaping manager at Perth Gardening Experts, said to start by prepping the soil and ticking off other important tasks that will promote the health of your plants for the entire growing season.

“This is the best time of year to establish a new garden because it ticks all the boxes in terms of what nature is doing,” he said.

“Every garden has its unique attributes but in broad terms the key elements will be your soil and your water.

“The Swan coastal plain is mostly sand so it is devoid of nutrition and water repelling, which means the best advice for any garden in Perth is to build up the organic content of the soil to help increase the nutritional value and drainage.”

Matthew Cunningham, a landscape architect at Tim Davies Landscaping (TDL), said to start by checking your irrigation is functioning properly and then start to improve your soil.

The next issues to tackle are topping up your mulch and making sure weeds and pests aren’t able to get the upper hand in your beds.

“Early spring is really the time of the year that you want to start getting most plants in the ground,” Mr Cunningham told Western Suburbs Weekly.

“The warmer and longer days, along with occasional showers and retained moisture in the soils means roots can establish faster, entering a strong growth period.

“This may be a slight curve ball but now is the time to also consider cutting back and preparing any large shrubs or small trees for transplant.

“Maybe you’ve got a tree that you planted a few years ago that has outgrown the space.

“Now is the time to get that prepared for relocation to it’s new home.
