Herdman heads to Indonesia after Cavalry championship run
Jay Herdman’s run with Cavalry FC has come to an end, with Calgary’s professional men’s footie club confirming Monday that the midfielder has been transferred to Bali United FC of Indonesia’s Super League.
Cavalry GM/coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. praises the qualities Herdman brought to the field, calling him “very shifty and able to find or create space” while highlighting his “terrific competitive edge.”
Herdman joined Cavalry on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in September 2024 and helped the club capture its first Canadian Premier League championship that November. He subsequently signed on with Cavalry in January 2025.

His 2024 loan produced one goal and one assist in eight appearances, including starts in Cavalry’s playoff run. He scored his only CPL goal and added an assist in a 4-1 victory over Pacific FC on Oct. 5.
Before the championship game, the athletic midfielder was all-in on a Cavalry victory, saying, “The team is always before the individual … play for the team and try to bring this trophy back.”
This season, Herdman has appeared in seven CPL matches, starting three and playing 255 minutes with one assist.
Overall, he’s seen the pitch 36 times for Cavalry during his tenure, striking one goal.
The 22-year-old’s final season in Calgary comes after a career that has taken him from the Vancouver Whitecaps academy to professional football and international competition. Born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and raised in Auckland and Surrey, B.C., Herdman joined the Whitecaps residency program as a teenager. He played for Whitecaps FC 2 in MLS NEXT Pro and represented New Zealand at the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. He is the son of former Canada national coach John Herdman.
