Blue Jays considering Ricky Tiedemann promotion

One of the Toronto Blue Jays ' top prospects appears to be closing in on his major league debut.

The Blue Jays are considering promoting right-hander Ricky Tiedemann to the majors as soon as Saturday's game against the New York Yankees, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported.

Johnny Giunta of the Gate14 podcast was first to suggest Tiedemann could be joining the Blue Jays.

Tiedemann, 23, was once the Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline but injuries have derailed his development in recent seasons.

He went under the knife for Tommy John surgery in 2024, missed the entire 2025 season and then was slow to build up this season due to elbow soreness. He was activated from the minor-league IL on Aug. 5 and has made three relief appearances for triple-A Buffalo in the week since, allowing four runs and five hits with four strikeouts.

Tiedemann was a guest on Jays Talk+ on Thursday and said now that he's healthy, he's focusing more on pitching than the possibility that the Blue Jays could call him up to the majors.

"It's hard not to think about how you could help the big league club in the quickest way possible but that's more for (manager John) Schneider and (pitching coach) Pete Walker to think about," Tiedemann said. "For me it's more about going out there, throwing my game and making sure I'm getting the outs so when they do call I'm ready to go."

The Blue Jays have not named a starter for Saturday's game against the Yankees yet but it is expected to be a bullpen game due to recent injuries to Trey Yesavage and Jameson Taillon. The bullpen has been worn down recently as the team nears the end of a stretch of 17 games in 17 days. Former Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald was added to the relief corps on Friday to help ease that burden.
