Man charged after breaking into popular Chinatown bakery
A man has been charged with breaking into a popular Vancouver Chinatown bakery that was featured in a Netflix film.
Vancouver police said a neighbour across the street spotted a man on the roof of a building on East Pender, between Columbia and Main Street, on Thursday morning and called police.
“When officers arrived, they observed the man trying to flee while carrying an item believed to have been taken from the bakery,” police said in a statement. Police said the item was cooking equipment.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was taken to jail but later released. He has since been charged with break-and-enter and is expected back in court at a later date.
While police did not publicize the name of the bakery, it is believed to be New Town Bakery & Restaurant, which was featured in the Netflix film Always Be My Maybe, starring Ali Wong and Randall Park.
The movie filmed throughout Vancouver in the spring and summer of 2018, before later being released on Netflix in 2019. New Town Bakery served as Best Luck Dim Sum in the romantic comedy.
