Calgary Airport moves to Phase 2 of restoration more than two years after hail damage
Two years and three weeks after the Calgary airport’s domestic terminal Concourse B was battered by a severe hailstorm, Wednesday marked the next phase of restoration to prepare the space to reopen.
The next stage of work will focus on building out the concourse and prepare it for reopening to the public in 2027.
A mix of gate seating with relaxation space will be available for guests, with upgraded washrooms and a brightly lit space that makes travellers feel like they are in Alberta with the materials that were chosen, Miles said.
With the airport’s new centralized security screening point, the upgraded concourse will ensure a better experience for guests, Miles said.

“You’ll see biometric provisions where we’re able to actually use the latest and greatest technology that will even make the journey smoother and faster for passengers,” Miles said.
“Over the past two years, we really appreciate the patience of our community. We’ve put a lot of flights into concourses A and C, and we’ll be able to spread the flights around a little bit more.”
On Aug. 5, 2024, a 30-minute torrential hailstorm became the second-costliest natural disaster in Canadian history from an insurance perspective, said Calgary Airports chief operating officer Chris Miles.
The storm left cracks in the concourse’s roofing structure and filled up the space “almost like a swimming pool,” damaging drywall, insulation, roofing material and ceiling tiles, he said.
“The concourse at that point was beyond operational salvage from a passenger point of view,” Miles said.
The space was stripped down to the studs to facilitate the restoration work, he said.
The terminal structure for Concourse B was originally built in 1976, and the improvements will comply with modern building codes and design requirements.
