Carney has a ‘weak hand’ in Trump negotiations: Shuv Majumdar

National Post ·

With next week's deadline for new U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports fast approaching, the opposition Conservatives are calling on the prime minister to finally start delivering on trade — and to stop the unilateral concessions.

In this interview, Rob Breakenridge speaks with Conservative MP Shuv Majumdar, the party’s shadow minister for Canada-U.S. relations, about the state of talks ahead of the Aug.

19 deadline and about the letter that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre sent to Mark Carney this week.

Majumdar says the Liberals have put Canada in a position of weakness heading into these talks, and that Carney has failed to utilize Canada’s strengths to build leverage with Washington.

Instead, the Conservatives accuse the prime minister of making too many concessions without having secured any reciprocal gains from the Trump administration.

We'll look at where things stand heading into next week — and beyond.
