Calgary-Shaw byelection set for Sept. 14
Voters in the riding of Calgary-Shaw will go to the polls Sept. 14 to choose a new provincial representative.
Chief electoral officer Gordon McClure announced the byelection date Monday. The seat has been vacant since Rebecca Schulz left the UCP government in May, five months after resigning from cabinet.
Businessman Mike Derry bested Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean to win the UCP nomination in June. Kyle Campbell is the NDP’s declared candidate.
The fledgling Progressive Tory Party of Alberta, led by former UCP cabinet minister Peter Guthrie, has said it expects to name its candidate soon.

Candidate nominations won’t close until 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 but the campaigning has already begun.
“Calgary-Shaw cannot afford an NDP MLA helping Naheed Nenshi oppose the pipelines, investment and energy jobs Alberta’s economy depends on,” the UCP said in a statement soon after the byelection date was confirmed.
Calgary-Shaw counts more than 39,000 eligible voters, according to Elections Alberta. Turnout in the May 2023 provincial election was 63 per cent.
